IRISH AIRLINE WANTS 2-DRINK LIMIT PER PASSENGER
Europe’s biggest airline, Ryanair, has asked the European Union to impose a limit on the number of alcoholic drinks a person can buy at an airport.
This comes after a drink from Dublin to Lanzarote in April 2024 was severely disrupted due to an unruly passenger.
Ryanair has since filed for 15,000 euros in damages from the passenger. A statement released by the airline said the passenger’s “inexcusable behaviour forced this flight to divert to Porto where it was delayed overnight, causing 160 passengers to face unnecessary disruption”.
The airline’s suggestion is to “use boarding passes in exactly the same way they limit duty-free sales”.
Ryanair’s CEO Michael O’Leary said that the airline, and many others as well, already banned the sale of alcohol on their aircraft as passenger violence due to alcohol abuse has severely increased over the last couple of years.
Last year, The International Air Transport Association released data showing that passenger violence on planes has increased in recent years.
CNN reports that in 2023, there was one incident of unruly passenger behaviour for every 480 flights compared to one for every 568 flights in 2022.
