JIMMY CARTER LAID TO REST
Former United States president Jimmy Carter has been laid to rest.
The 100-year-old passed away on 29 December.
The state funeral for Carter, who was president from 1977 to 1981, took place in Washington DC and brought together the five living presidents.
George W Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Joe Biden and their respective partners all attended the funeral on Thursday.
The eulogy was delivered by sitting president Joe Biden. During his delivery, he said Carter made a “powerful difference” during his time as president of the United States and established a “model post-presidency”.
The speech also focused on Carter’s character and faith.
Once the funeral ended, Carter’s casket started its journey to its final resting place in the state of Georgia.
The casket was flown on a special air mission.
The 39th president of the United States will be laid to rest next to his wife, Rosalynn, on his family’s peanut farm.
As the plane departed, the Special Honour Guard rendered their final salute to the late president.
The BBC reports that during his tenure as president Carter faced a spate of foreign policy challenges and the Democrat was defeated in his re-election bid by Ronald Reagan.
