UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA IN TOP 200 UNIVERSITIES AROUND THE WORLD
The University of Pretoria started 2024 on a high note as it was announced that it had been placed 167th out of 1,744 universities worldwide.
This is according to the 2025 QS World University Sustainability Rankings that measure universities' social and environmental impacts across various aspects related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This was the third edition of the QS Sustainability Rankings and it was released earlier this month.
Tuks is ranked number 1 in South Africa and Africa for Governance; in the top 50 in the world for Knowledge Exchange and Governance; top 200 in the world for Environmental Education and Environmental Impact; and top 250 in the world for Social Impact and Equality.
According to the SDGs, governance is measured as whether ranked institutions are fostering “good leadership, a democratic process of appointing their leadership, open and documented decision-making, and power not only in the hands of the executive but across the institution and including the students that they serve”.
Professor Francis Petersen, the university’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, said he’s “immensely proud of the remarkable strides we continue to make in advancing our global impact, both locally and internationally”.
