NEW POST OFFICE BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed the South African Post Office (Sapo) SOC Ltd Amendment Bill into law. If the law is successful, it could be a step in the right direction to turn around the state-owned enterprise struggling financially.

In 2023, Sapo was placed under business rescue because it owed R8.7 billion.

The new law hopes to expand the mandate of Sapo and repurpose SOE infrastructure to provide diversified and increased services while enabling Sapo relevance and sustainability by including services responding to the needs of users and customers.

The Citizen reports that the Presidency said Sapo would also be able to serve as a logistics partner to other e-commerce providers, including small enterprises and informal traders. This would include any business that the SOE may develop that serves users and consumers.

The new law also aims to enable the SOE to serve as a digital hub for government and other agency services for businesses and communities.
