ADELE’S SONG TO BE PULLED GLOBALLY OVER PLAGIARISM

A Brazilian judge has ordered Adele to pull her song Million Years Ago on every streaming platform across the world.

This comes after Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes’ claim that Adele’s 2015 song copied the music of his samba classic Mulheres. Geraes originally wrote the music of his samba classic on a 1995 hit album recorded by Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila.

The injunction stipulates that the Brazilian subsidiaries of Adele’s labels, Sony and Universal, could be fined up to about R146,000 “per act of non-compliance”.

The injunction was made in Rio de Janeiro, pending further activity in the continuing plagiarism case. It orders Sony and Universal to stop “immediately and globally, from using, reproducing, editing, distributing, or commercializing the song Million Years Ago, by any modality, means, physical or digital support, streaming or sharing platform”.

The music companies can still appeal the decision.

Geraes is suing Sony and Universal for lost royalties, almost R3 million in moral damages, as well as songwriting credit on Adele’s track.
