GUINNESS SHORTAGE LEAVES PUB OWNERS WORRIED
Guinness has always been one of the most popular beers in the world, but now more so than ever and it’s leaving pub owners worried that their stock is about to run dry.
Over the past two years, the Irish stout’s popularity has skyrocketed in popularity. It’s been noted especially among women and young people.
According to CGA, a data insights firm for food and drink businesses in the United Kingdom (UK), sales of beer decreased by 0.5% in the UK. But, sales of Guinness, specifically of kegs, grew by 20.9%.
By the end of October, Guinness was the number-one-selling beer in the UK by volume.
The increase in popularity might have to do with several marketing campaigns aimed purely at dispelling the notion that Guinness is a drink for older men only.
Influencers on TikTok have also been credited with making the beer trendy, especially with the ‘splitting the G’ challenge.
The challenge requires drinkers to swallow enough beer on their first drink that the line between liquid and foam ends up halfway through the “G” of the Guinness brand on the glass.
Even singers like Niall Horan and Ed Sheeran have posted videos of them splitting the G on social media.
Diageo, the company that owns Guinness, has warned pub owners in the UK that there might be a shortage as they’re currently struggling to keep up with demand.
