MAJOR FLIGHT DELAY AS OR TAMBO RUNS OUT OF JET FUEL
Monday saw several flights being delayed and eventually cancelled as OR Tambo ran out of jet fuel.
The timing of the situation couldn’t have been worse as it came only two days after South African Airways pilots ended their strike.
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) released a statement about the fuel crisis experienced at South Africa’s busiest airport.
“Please be advised that due to refuelling challenges at OR Tambo International Airport, airlines are currently unable to refuel aircraft as normal. As a result, some flights may experience delays. “
Passengers were encouraged to contact the airlines to confirm the status of their flight.
On Tuesday morning, ACSA posted on social platform X that “the fuel system at OR Tambo International Airport east of Johannesburg is now fully operational”.
During an interview with broadcaster Talk Radio 702, a spokesperson for ACSA confirmed that the situation was caused due to a broken valve.
Due to the vast amount of flights delayed or cancelled on Monday, thousands of passengers had to scramble to make alternative arrangements.
Many were forced to go back to where they came from and return on Tuesday as the airlines played catch-up.
