ITALY BANS AIRBNB SELF CHECK-IN

Italy’s Interior Ministry has had enough of the overwhelming number of tourists taking over the country during peak seasons.

Soon, law enforcement officers will be deployed in popular tourist areas where they are to ensure the removal of key boxes and keypads at self-check-in properties.

Over the years, the number of tourists to countries in Western Europe has increased alarmingly with countries like Greece considering limiting the number of tourists visiting attractions per day.

With the Vatican’s Holy Jubilee around the corner in 2025 and the Winter Olympics in 2026 the country’s Interior Ministry is trying to tighten up the laws where they can.

Italian law requires all renters, no matter how long their stay, to register at the local police station. But over the last few years, property managers have used a messaging service where they merely send photocopies or cellphone photos as proof of registration.

According to official communications announcing the ban, the new regulation must “implement stringent measures to prevent risks to public order and safety about the possible accommodation of dangerous people or those linked to criminal or terrorist organisations”.
