HEATWAVE ACROSS THREE PROVINCES

The second heatwave of the summer has hit and it’s causing extremely hot temperatures in several provinces.

The Free State, North West and some parts of the Northern Cape have already been warned over the weekend that they need to brace for extremely high fire danger conditions.

Now, it’s Gauteng’s turn. Conditions across these four provinces are ideal for fires to develop and spread rapidly. Human and animal life loss is also a possibility, according to the South African Weather Service.

People have been warned to stay out of the sun, and if they can’t do so, drinking lots of fluids and resting often has been advised.

Schools across the provinces have been encouraged to ensure there’s enough drinking water for students, and farmers have been warned to keep an eye out for animals that may die due to dehydration or heat.

The heatwave is expected to last until at least Friday with the UV sunburn index reaching “very high” levels.

The eastern and western halves of the Eastern Cape were expected to get some rain, bringing relief to some of the heat currently experienced in that province.
