JANUSZ WALUS DEPORTED TO POLAND

Convicted assassin Janusz Walus is set to be deported to his birth country, Poland today.

Walus was convicted of killing Chris Hani, the South African Communist Party (SACP) General Secretary in 1993.

He spent almost 30 years in jail for the murder.

Walus’ parole period comes to an end today. He was out on parole after the Constitutional Court ordered former Minister of Justice Ronald Lamola to grant him parole.

In a statement, the Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni gave more information regarding the deportation process.

“Today, the 6th of December 2024, the parole period of Janusz Walus has come to an end in line with the Constitutional Court decision

“Since Janusz Walus no longer holds any South African enabling documents, the Department of Home Affairs will be deporting him. This morning, the national commissioner of Correctional Services will formally hand over Janusz Walus to the Department of Home Affairs for deportation.”

Now 71, Walus immigrated from Poland to South Africa in 1981. He was granted citizenship back then, but it was revoked after his murder conviction.

Initially, he was sentenced to death alongside his co-defendant Clive Derby-Lewis. Because South Africa abolished the death penalty soon after, his death sentence was changed to a life sentence.
