SUSPECT CHARGED WITH BRIAN THOMPSON’S MURDER
Luigi Nicholas Mangione was arrested and charged with the murder of Brian Thompson on Monday.
Mangione shot and killed the UnitedHealthcare CEO from behind on the streets of New York last week.
The 26-year-old was recognised by a McDonald’s employee while he was sitting in one of the fast food chain’s restaurants in the state of Pennsylvania. The employee alerted authorities that a man who looked similar to the fugitive was currently sitting in the restaurant reading.
When authorities showed up, they asked him to lower his mask. Mangione began shaking when the officers asked him if he had been in New York over the last few days.
He was found with a gun, mask and writings linking him to the murder.
In Pennsylvania, he was charged with weapons, forgery and other charges. He has been extradited to New York where he will be charged with murder.
Following the arrest, Mangione’s family released a statement.
“Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione. We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.
“We are devastated by this news.”
Mangione graduated with honours from an Ivy League university.
