DONALD TRUMP WANTS TO BUY GREENLAND
Even though Greenland has made it clear that it’s not for sale, Donald Trump still insists on buying it.
Shortly after the United States President-elect announced his desire to buy the Arctic island, his son Donald Trump Jr. arrived on the island.
Trump Jr. told CNN that the trip was not for business, but for pleasure. He described his trip as “a little bit of fun” saying “As an outdoorsman, I’m excited to stop into Greenland for this week”.
At a news conference, Trump was asked why he wanted to buy Greenland and Panama, to which replied: “We need them for economic security.”
The security Trump is referring to is the ongoing threats received from Russia.
Although he’s insisting on the importance of security, many experts believe he could be more interested in Greenland’s natural resources like rare earth metals.
Due to climate changes, the icy territory where the earth's metals are hidden has come to melt, exposing everything.
CNN reports that Greenland is the world’s largest island and home to more than 56,000 people. A former Danish colony and now an autonomous territory of Denmark, it occupies a unique geopolitical position, sitting between the US and Europe. Its capital city Nuuk is closer to New York than it is to Denmark’s capital Copenhagen.
