CHAD’S PRESIDENTIAL PALACE ATTACKED

Twenty-four people have died, three wounded and six are in custody following an attack on Chad’s presidential palace.

Three of the wounded are soldiers and one of those that have died is also a soldier.

The attack took place while President Mahamat Deby Into was inside the palace. Ironically, the attack happened on the same day as the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Deby Into to congratulate him on reestablishing constitutional order in the African country.

Chad recently held an extremely controversial election when Deby Into was declared the winner and new president. He had led the country before when he was interim president following his father's death in 2021.

In a live Facebook broadcast filmed inside the palace on Wednesday, Chad’s Foreign Affairs Minister Abderaman Koulamallah said “The situation is completely under control. There is no fear”.

Directly after news of the attack broke, rumours were spreading online that the Islamic militant group Boko Haram was behind the attack, but this was quickly denied as the attackers were identified as local youths from the capital, N’Djamena.

According to Koulamallah, the attackers were youth who were disorganised and intoxicated by drugs and alcohol.
