TIKTOK OFFICIALLY OFFLINE IN THE US

With two hours to spare before the app legally had to shut down, TikTok shut down in the United States.

This means everyone in the United States or anyone who first registered their TikTok account in the United States will no longer be able to use one of the world’s most popular social media apps.

This is all because of a new law which President Joe Biden signed that prevents American companies from hosting or serving content for Chinese-owned social media platforms. That is unless the platform is bought by a company based in the United States or one of its allies.

All the drama might be temporary though, because President-elect Donald Trump is being inaugurated this week and he’s made it clear that he will try his best to reverse the ban.

This was reiterated in a statement released by TikTok:

“We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!”

Rumours have been doing the rounds that Trump will most likely delay a ban on TikTok for 90 days after he takes office.

CNN reports that lawmakers said TikTok’s ties to China and its access to reams of data posed a threat to national security.
