TRUMP CONVINCED THE US WILL GET GREENLAND
US President Donald Trump still believes the US will be able to gain control of Greenland.
He addressed the topic during a flight on Air Force One.
“I think we’re going to have it,” adding that the island’s 57,000 residents “want to be with us”.
“I don’t really know what claim Denmark has to it, but it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn’t allow that to happen because it’s for the protection of the free world.
“I think Greenland we’ll get because it has to do with freedom of the world.”
During his first term as president in 2019, Trump mentioned that the US being in control of Greenland is an “absolute necessity” for international security.
When he was elected president again for his second term, Trump brought up the topic again.
This led to a telephone conversation between Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Trump, in which Frederiksen insisted the country wasn’t for sale.
The BBC reports that Greenland lies on the shortest route from North America to Europe, making it strategically important for the US. It is also home to a large American space facility.
