WWII UNDERGROUND TUNNELS TO BECOME TOURIST ATTRACTION
London is a city bustling with tourists and has some of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. That’s all above ground, but what will you find if you go under the busy streets?
Built during World War II, there are 30 metres of underground tunnels below central London. The entrance to the tunnels is located 40 metres below Chancery Lane tube station in High Holborn. Believe it or not, it’s about to become another tourist attraction.
Known as the Kingsway Exchange Tunnels, these tunnels were built in the 1940s to protect Londoners from the Blitz bombing during World War II.
Now, a private company has been given planning approval to transform these tunnels into a tourist attraction hosting a museum, exhibition and entertainment space. All three spaces will focus on the tunnels and provide information on what they were used for in the past.
The transformation is set to cost a whopping $149 million and is scheduled to open to the public by late 2027 or early 2028.
