The city of Cape Town has been named South Africa’s healthiest city. This is according to new research done by Discovery Vitality and based on 300,000 Vitality Health Checks.

The health checks were completed across the country in 2022.

According to Discovery Vitality, Cape Town is the city with the “healthiest weight”.

“We analysed almost 300,000 Vitality Health Checks completed across South Africa in 2002 to rank the cities according to the proportion of Vitality members who have a healthy weight,” said Discovery Vitality CEO Dinesh Govender.

He added that “globally, research shows good nutrition and physical activity are important for managing weight. That is why we also analysed members’ physical activity and food purchasing data to give us insights into our members’ exercise and eating habits”.

Here is a list of the rankings:

1.      Cape Town

2.      Johannesburg

3.      Durban

4.      Pretoria

5.      Bloemfontein

6.      Gqeberha

Johannesburg is the city with the highest percentage of Vitality members logging their workouts, while Bloemfontein had the lowest percentage.

The research also showed habits when it comes to buying healthy food. Cape Town came in first as the city with the highest number of healthy food purchases. Pretoria came in last.
