FORMER PAKISTAN PM STABLE AFTER ASSASINATION ATTEMPT
Imran Khan is in a stable condition after he survived an assassination attempt. The former Prime Minister of Pakistan was hit in the leg with a bullet at a political rally in Islamabad.
Khan, the former cricketer was wounded when someone fired shots at him. The shots were aimed at other officials standing on a modified container truck driving through a crowd near the city of Gujranwala.
The BBC reports that Khan has been leading a chaotic convoy of thousands since Friday from the city of Lahore towards the capital, Islamabad, campaigning for fresh elections after being ousted from office in April.
The country’s former information minister Fawad Chaundhry told AFP “there was a guy who was in front of the container who had this automatic pistol. He fired a burst. Everyone who was standing in the very front row got hit”.
While six people were injured, only one was killed.
This is not the first time that a former Pakistan Prime Minister has been at the centre of an assassination attempt.
In 2007, former Prime Minister Benazir Butto died when a massive bomb detonated near her car as she greeted supporters in Rawalpindi. She stood up through the roof hatch when she was fatally shot.
The 70-year-old Khan has been heavily involved in this march.
