GREENLAND ENJOYING MAJOR TOURISM BOOST
While many countries try to avoid being under US President Donald Trump’s spotlight, Greenland has been reaping the rewards.
Just recently, Trump announced that the US would like to buy Greenland. In December, Donald Trump Jr arrived in Greenland, and it made international headlines. Soon after, the President increased his focus on Greenland and gave his reasons for wanting to buy the island.
The Danish government, of which Greenland is a sovereign member, has made it very clear that the country isn’t for sale.
Even though the country isn’t for sale, it is preparing itself for a massive influx of tourists this summer and many believe it’s because of Trump’s comments and his interest in the country’s wealth of rare earth minerals that are commonly used in high-tech industries.
Along with Trump’s interest, the country has also just recently built a brand-new airport in the capital city of Nuuk.
CNN reports that the country’s vast ice sheet, glaciers, deep fjords and abundance of marine life, including whales, are the key attractions, while pride in the local lnuit culture is also growing.
Currently, Greenland is dependent on fishing for 95% of its exports. With tourism, the government hopes to diversify its economy.
