SA ATHLETES WIN MEDALS AT INDOOR CHAMPS
Not only did Prudence Sekgodiso bag a gold medal at the recent World Indoor Championships, but fellow South African athlete Akani Simbine won a bronze medal.
The international event is currently being held in Nanjing, China.
Sekgodiso spent the majority of the race in second and third place but dug deep to finish the final lap of the 800 metres with a world-leading time of 1:58.40.
She secured the first gold medal at the highly respected World Indoor Champs and also showed the world that she’s ready to take over from Caster Semenya.
Simbine, an Olympic medalist, came third in the men’s 60m dash with a time of 6.54 seconds after winning his morning heat.
This is his first individual world medal. His Olympic medals were won as one of four team athletes when South Africa came second in two races at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
The championship is Simbine’s first indoor competition and its an event he is using as preparation for his outdoor season.
The outdoor season is set to start during the Northern Hemisphere’s Spring and will finish in Tokyo in September.
