PRODUCT RECALLS RISING

The list of products being recalled in South Africa is growing.

Arguably the biggest recall to have hit the country was back in 2018 when Tiger Brands detected listeriosis in some of its canned food. It not only had a detrimental effect on the company’s share prices, but it also meant massive losses.

Business Insider reports that one of the reasons for the rising claims results from South African businesses changing suppliers over the past two years, which also indicates the impact Covid-19 had on suppliers.

Recent recalls include Tiger Brands Purity Essentials, and Purity and Elizabeth Anne’s Essentials baby powder. Tiger Brands said it detected trace levels of asbestos in test samples of the talc raw material used in its baby powder products.

Elgin Fruit Juice was recently investigated as the source related to a string of recalls. The company was identified as the supplier of 100% juice to the fruit juice producers they supplied to, including Appletiser, Ceres, LiquiFruit and Woolworths.

Elevated levels of fruit-based mould were detected in all the brands.

Other brands that were recalled include Mercedes-Benz, McCain’s frozen foods, Nestle’s KitKat, as well as Dark and Lovely by L’oreal.

L’oreal’s recall not only affected local markets, but also those in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, eSwatini, Zambia and Madagascar.
