SUNRISERS SMASH MI CAPE TOWN
Sunrisers Eastern Cape put on a commanding display to crush defending champions MI Cape Town and send them out of the SA20 2026 playoff race in Gqeberha on Sunday.
The home side chased down a modest target with seven wickets in hand and just one ball to spare, underlining their dominance this season and locking in a Qualifier 1 spot, meaning they’ll avoid the Eliminator and go straight into the next round.
MI Cape Town were sent in to bat but never really got going. Their total of 148/6 was built around a gritty 70 not out from Reeza Hendricks, but lacked big contributions elsewhere. Sunrisers’ bowlers, led by Australian spinner Chris Green, struck regularly to keep the hosts in control.
In reply, Sunrisers rode a superb partnership between Quinton de Kock (56) and Matthew Breetzke (66). The pair put on 109 for the second wicket and paced the run chase with real assurance, ultimately guiding their side to 149/3 in 19.5 overs.
Sunrisers are now firmly in the mix for a shot at another title, and they’re doing it with style. Their all-round performance in this clash shows they’re not just contenders, they’re one of the teams to beat as the season heads into the business end.
