CAPITALS DOMINATE MI CAPE TOWN IN COMMANDING SA20 WIN
Pretoria Capitals delivered a statement performance in the SA20 2025–26 season, thumping defending champions MI Cape Town by 53 runs at a packed SuperSport Park in Centurion on Monday night.
The victory not only gave the Capitals a crucial bonus point but also lifted them to the top of the SA20 standings with momentum firmly on their side.
MI Cape Town won the toss and elected to field, but it was Pretoria who seized control early.
The home side posted a competitive total of 185/6 in 20 overs, thanks to a blistering 53 from Sherfane Rutherford off just 27 balls, his maiden half-century of the tournament, and a lively 34 from Dewald Brevis.
The pair rescued Capitals from a precarious 89/4 situation, stitching together a quick 69-run fifth-wicket stand that shifted momentum firmly in their favour.
Rutherford’s attacking innings was filled with boundaries and sixes that kept the crowd roaring, while Brevis punished loose balls and provided crucial support. Their effort helped Pretoria finish strongly, scoring 84 runs in the last five overs.
MI Cape Town’s chase never really got going. Reeza Hendricks’ 68 not out was a lone bright spot as the visitors struggled to build partnerships, eventually being restricted to 132/7.
Gideon Peters was the pick of the Pretoria bowlers with 3/32, ripping through Cape Town’s middle order and triggering their collapse.
The defending champions now face an uphill battle to keep their playoff hopes alive, needing wins, possibly with bonus points, in their final two fixtures. Meanwhile, Pretoria Capitals are buzzing with confidence as they push for a top finish in the league.
