PIRATES HOOK KIWI DE JONG
Orlando Pirates have officially announced the signing of New Zealand international Andre de Jong from Stellenbosch FC, a move that’s already got fans buzzing and pundits weighing in on what the versatile forward brings to the Soweto giants.
The 29-year-old isn’t your flashiest headline-grabbing streaker, but he’s a proven performer in South Africa’s top flight after nearly seven seasons with Stellenbosch, where he notched up 114 appearances with 19 goals and 11 assists.
Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has described De Jong as a crucial addition who adds energy and grit to a squad that’s leading the Betway Premiership and eyeing its first league title in over a decade.
Pirates legend Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi was quick to praise the signing, highlighting De Jong’s football intelligence and versatility.
According to Vilakazi, De Jong can slot in as a false nine, a number ten, or even tuck inside from wider areas, giving Ouaddou tactical options that weren’t always available before.
What makes this deal particularly interesting isn’t just De Jong’s skill set but how well he fits into the Pirates’ bigger picture. The Buccaneers are pushing hard for domestic glory, sitting at the top of the table with a two-point advantage and a game in hand over perennial rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.
