URUGUAYAN SOCCER PLAYER DIES

The Uruguayan soccer player who collapsed during a game at Sao Paulo has died. Juan Izquierdo was 27 years old when he died five days later in hospital.

In a statement released by the Hospital Albert Einstein, Izquierdo died at 21:38 local time following “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia”.

Izquierdo collapsed just before the final whistle blew in a Copa Libertadores match. The game took place at the Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo.

His club, Nacional, said Izquierdo’s death is felt “in deep pain and impact in our hearts” and “all Nacional is in grief for his irreplaceable loss”.

CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez said he’s “deeply sorry about the early departure of Juan Izquierdo”.

“South American soccer is mourning.”

Other federations like Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil also expressed their feelings.

CNN reports that Uruguayan media said Izquierdo’s parents and Nacional executives were at the hospital in Sao Paulo. Izquierdo was married and had two children – the youngest, a boy, was born earlier in August.
