WORLD’S SECOND LARGEST DIAMOND FOUND IN BOTSWANA

It has a sparkle second to none and it's created a big stir around the world. What’s considered to be the second biggest diamond ever found has recently been discovered in Botswana.

The 2,492-carat raw diamond was mined by the Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond Corp. The discovery was made at the Karowe diamond mine.

William Lamb, Lucara’s president, said they’re “ecstatic about the recovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond”.

The largest diamond the world has ever seen was found in 1905 in the South African town of Cullinan. The 3,106-carat diamond called the Cullinan diamond, was cut up into several stones. Some of those stones are still part of the British Royal Family’s Crown Jewels.

During a press conference, Botswana’s newly elected president, Mokweetsi Masisi was given the opportunity to hold the diamond. His expression said it all and the crowd of officials and the press could be heard gasping when it was placed in his hand.

Lucara didn’t disclose whether it’ll be cut up into smaller stones or what the value of the diamond is but referred to it as a “high quality” diamond.

According to Botswana’s government, this diamond is the biggest diamond ever discovered in the sub-Saharan African country.
