X CLOSES OFFICES IN BRAZIL

A censorship row is the reason given by X why it closed its offices in Brazil.

A spokesperson for X said a Brazilian Supreme Court judge, Alexandre de Moraes, threatened its legal representative in Brazil with arrest. The threat was made based on “censorship orders” made by the judge.

In a statement, X said that “as a result, to protect the safety of our staff, we have made the decision to close our operation in Brazil, effective immediately.”

“The responsibility lies with Alexandre de Moraes. His actions are incompatible with democratic government.”

Musk addressed the matter on the social platform, saying there’s “no question that Moraes needs to leave”.

Although the office has been closed and staff have been asked not to go to the office, people in Brazil are still able to use X.

The country’s Supreme Court declined to comment.

Moraes is no stranger to being unpopular among the public for making controversial decisions. Fans of former president Bolsanaro disliked him when he ordered investigations into the president’s allies during his presidency.
