TEAM SA NOW HAVE 5 MEDALS
South African athletes have added more medals to the country’s trophy cupboard.
The first medal was won by the Sevens rugby team who won a bronze medal.
Soon after that, Tatjana Smith managed to win a silver and a gold medal in the pool for the 200m and 100m breaststroke events respectively.
Smith made headlines when she also announced her retirement and said she will no longer compete professionally.
Alan Hatherley managed to get South Africa’s next bronze medal when he came third in the mountain bike cross-country event.
On Friday, Bayanda Walaza, Shaun Maswanganyi, Bradley Nkoana, and Akani SImbine made history when they won the silver medal in the 4 x 100m men’s relay.
On Saturday, Jo-Ane van Dyk added another medal to the list. The 26-year-old won silver when she came second during the women’s javelin throw.
President Cyril Ramaphosa was one of the first people to congratulate her. He took to social media, saying: “Congratulations, Jo-Ane van Dyk, on launching your javelin to glory in silver at #Paris2024. Well done and thanks for making #TeamSouthAfrica and all of us proud. We wish you many more podiums.”
The 2024 Paris Olympic Games came to an end last night with the closing ceremony taking place in Paris.
