GRADE 10 GIRL FOUND DEAD IN SCHOOL STOREROOM

Photos of 16-year-old Devenye Nel were circulated on social media on Wednesday after she didn’t catch her lift home to Grabouw.

Later that evening her body was found in a storeroom located on the school grounds. She was declared dead on the scene.

Devenye attended Overberg High School in Caledon where she was a grade 10 pupil. Her mother got worried when Devenye didn’t come home that afternoon after school. She usually caught a lift every afternoon.

Police were alerted immediately and a search for Devenye was launched.

Soon after, the police confirmed that the body of a 16-year-old pupil was found and the school informed the parents of the other pupils on Wednesday.

“Today, we are deeply distressed after one of our children died. The SAPS is handling the investigation. Therefore, the school must be closed on Thursday.”

In the same letter, the school said that counselling had been arranged for all pupils at a local church.

Captain FC van Wyk said a murder case has subsequently been opened and the case has been transferred to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes team for further investigation.
