QANTAS ACCIDENTALLY SELLS FIRST CLASS TICKETS AT MASSIVE DISCOUNT
A coding error was announced as the reason why hundreds of Qantas Airways passengers will have to be downgraded or refunded.
The error led to around 300 people being able to buy return flights between Australia and the United States at a massive 85% less than what they would’ve paid for a normal first-class ticket.
A spokesperson for the airline said the offer was an error on their side.
“Unfortunately, this is a case where the fare was actually too good to be true.”
As part of its plan, the airline said it’ll switch passengers who bought the bargain tickets into business class. This will happen at no additional cost.
“As a gesture of goodwill, we’re rebooking customers in business class at no additional cost. Customers also have the option of a full refund.”
This means that a passenger who has now been downgraded from first to business class will still be paying 65% less than usual for their ticket.
Although they’re getting a business class ticket at a bargain, the affected passengers are missing out on whiskey, champagne, a memory foam mattress and an a la carte food menu. First-class passengers flying on Qantas also have the luxury of choosing the type of pillow they prefer from the airline’s pillow menu.
The BBC reports that it’s not the first time an airline has mistakenly offered discounted prices. In 2019, Cathay Pacific accidentally sold $16,000 business class seats for $675. In the end, it did honour the tickets for those lucky passengers.
