BOY BREAKS 3,500-YEAR-OLD VASE BY ACCIDENT

A rare artefact believed to be from the Bronze Age has broken into pieces after an accident inside the Hecht Museum.

A four-year-old was visiting the museum with his dad when he “pulled the jar slightly” to see what was inside. It fell and broke into several pieces of different sizes.

The museum in the Israeli city of Haifa displayed the vase without glass or any other type of protection because it believed there was “special charm” in showcasing archaeological finds “without obstructions”.

What made this vase so rare is that it was so intact even though it dates back to between 2200 and 1500 BC.

The boy’s dad said he was in shock when he saw his son standing next to the broken vase and his first thought was that it wasn’t his son who was responsible.

Luckily, museum officials handled the situation well.

Lihi Laszlo from the museum said “There are instances where display items are intentionally damaged, and such cases are treated with great severity, including involving the police… In this case, however, this was not the situation. The jar was accidentally damaged by a young child visiting the museum, and the response will be accordingly”.

The young boy has been invited back to the Hecht Museum.
