ADIDAS AND GUCCI COLLABORATION PRODUCES UMBRELLA THAT’S NOT WATERPROOF

Two of the biggest names in fashion and footwear have come together to create something that has tongues wagging for all the wrong reasons.

The new range, Adidas x Gucci offers an umbrella that isn’t waterproof.

Business Insider reports that it features a G-shaped handle and a print design combining the logos of both brands.

The “sun umbrella” as Gucci refers to it on its website is sold at just over R20,000.

It also adds a side note saying “Please note, this item is not waterproof and is meant for sun protection or decorative use.”

Chinese fashion followers and keen shoppers have noticed the umbrella and have made such a fuss that the price of the umbrella is now more in China than in any other country.

In response to the question ‘why would someone buy an umbrella that isn’t waterproof?’, a Gucci representative told Caijing magazine that its sun umbrella has “good collector’s value and is suitable for use as a daily accessory”.

The representative went on to say that the item “isn’t recommended for use as an everyday umbrella”.

Users on China’s Weibo social media platform weren’t afraid to share their disgust over the use of the umbrella or its price.

A hashtag related to the sun umbrella has drawn more than 140 million views in only one week.

The highly anticipated launch is scheduled to take place on 7 June.
