ALMOST 100% STUDENTS PLACED, SAYS GAUTENG EDUCATION DEPT

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has announced that just over 99% of grade 1 and grade 8 pupils have been placed in the province.

The news was announced at an event where Chiloane gave an update on the 2024 online admissions process.

According to Chiloane, the province is in a better state than it has ever been with online admissions for the two grades.

Gauteng is the only province in the country that requires students to apply for schools in order to attend grade 1 (primary school) or grade 8 (high school) the following year.

Chiloane said only 32,795 of the more than 300,000 students who applied haven’t been placed yet. The reasons for the placement backlog included invalid documents.

“These are parents who’ve had incomplete applications, they didn’t submit all the required documents including home address and so forth.”

Those with complete applications have been placed in schools across the province successfully.

“From the computer applications we have managed to place 99.8% of them, so we are left with just a few – 0.2% which is quite significant. We are left with a small number.”

Chiloane reassured those who raised their concerns that by 17 January 2024, when Gauteng schools open again, all learners will be placed in classrooms.
