CHAPPEL ROAN MAKES DONATION FOLLOWING GRAMMY SPEECH
After sharing her thoughts on struggling artists on stage, Chappel Roan kept her word and made a massive donation towards the music industry.
Roan, who received the Best New Artist Grammy last month, highlighted the struggles faced by artists who aren’t backed by major labels during her acceptance speech.
The Pink Pony Club singer said she was dropped by her label during COVID and struggled to find a job. She also said she couldn’t afford health insurance.
Following her speech, Roan donated almost R500,000 to Backline, an organisation that offers support to workers in the music industry, whether they’re artists or tour bus drivers. The organisation assists these workers with financial aid and wellbeing services.
The US-based charity said they were “blown away” by the donation and the support that followed after Roan’s acceptance speech.
“We really appreciate her using that moment to call for action to change the music industry.”
It seems as if Roan’s speech and donation had an impact on successful artists as well. On Monday, Noah Kahan and Charli XCX both matched Roan’s donation to Backline.
“A lot of others have followed suit. This is a movement and it’s gonna take every single person in the industry calling for this.”
