MINIMUM WAGE TO TAKE EFFECT 1 MARCH
The government has raised the minimum wage in South Africa from R27.58 to R28.79 per ordinary hour worked.
The increase of 4.38% is just below the recommended number made by the National Minimum Wage Commission.
The Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth announced in 2024 that the new wage will take effect on 1 March 2025 and will apply to all employees covered by the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and domestic and farm workers.
The department has taken extra care to ensure local companies follow the new regulations.
At the end of last year, the Department of Employment and Labour launched Project 20,000. The project aims to enhance the Inspection and Enforcement Services oversight and enforcement.
The project has increased the number of inspectors from 2,000 to 20,000, something Minister Nkosozana Meth hopes will help to highlight the importance of the implementation.
“We are committed to the implementation of social protection initiatives and wage increases, such as the introduction and implementation of the National Minimum Wage.
“This ensures that workers receive their dues and are not exploited for the services they render. Every employer may not pay wages that are below the minimum wage,” Meth added.
