ORIGINAL VAN GOGH FOUND AT GARAGE SALE
The saying ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ has never been more true. Four years ago, hidden among random stuff on sale at a garage sale, a buyer found an artwork painted by the Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh.
The previous owner, who lives in Minnesota, United States, bought the piece and then took it to art research firm LMI Group International.
Their experts conducted an analysis of the canvas weave, paint pigment and other characteristics, and found the piece to be an original.
The painting, made by Van Gogh while he was staying at a psychiatric hospital in France in 1889, bears the inscription “Elimar” in the bottom right corner.
The painting measures about 58 centimetres by about 42 centimetres is an oil on canvas portraying a fisherman with a white beard smoking a pipe while he repairs his net.
The experts at LMI Group International are confident in their findings, but now the painting will have to be sent to Amsterdam where the Van Gogh Museum will give its final stamp of approval.
