CITY COME FROM BEHIND TO TOPPLE REAL MADRID
Manchester City delivered a dramatic comeback at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, overturning an early deficit to beat Real Madrid 2-1 in a key UEFA Champions League clash that’s left plenty of talking points.
City’s victory not only keeps them firmly in contention in the league phase, but also heaps pressure on Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso after another disappointing home result.
Real Madrid looked in control early on when Rodrygo struck in the 28th minute, giving the hosts a deserved lead and sparking celebrations among the Bernabéu crowd. It was his first goal in a long while and seemed to set the tone for a confident Madrid performance in front of their own supporters.
But City responded with real punch. Within seven minutes of going behind, Nico O’Reilly levelled with a composed finish that brought the visitors back on terms, and just before half-time, Erling Haaland converted from the penalty spot to give City the lead.
That spot-kick followed Antonio Rüdiger's foul on Haaland in the box, and the Norwegian striker kept his cool to slot home.
Haaland’s goal continued his remarkable Champions League scoring run, marking another big moment in his impressive continental record.
Even without a late reply from Madrid, the hosts still pressed in the second half when Endrick rattled the post, and Real had chances. But City’s defence held firm to see out the win.
The result lifts City higher in the group standings, moving them into the top eight with momentum on their side. Meanwhile, Madrid’s defeat has added to mounting scrutiny around Alonso’s future, with questions being asked after back-to-back home losses.
