CONSTITUTIONAL COURT APPROVES DUAL CITIZENSHIP FOR SOUTH AFRICANS

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has welcomed the ruling by the Constitutional Court confirming that South African citizens can have dual citizenship.

This was no easy feat, as the party said they had to jump through all the legal hoops to get the revised section of the Citizenship Act reversed.

First, the party had to take legal action before the High Court in Pretoria. Following that, the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein was next. The Supreme Court ruled that the revised section is constitutionally invalid.

The final step was confirmation from the Constitutional Court for the Appeal Court order to take effect.

Dr Leon Schreiber, Minister of Home Affairs, has been tasked with giving effect to the order of the highest court in the country.

The order also means that those South Africans who lost their citizenship when they accepted citizenship in another country will now have it restored, since the ruling found it to be unconstitutional.

South African passport holders with citizenship will now be allowed to have dual citizenship again.
