DR CONGO STUNS NIGERIA TO KEEP 2026 WORLD CUP DREAM ALIVE
The Democratic Republic of Congo pulled off a stunning upset against Nigeria, knocking them out of contention for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a tense playoff final in Rabat, the match ended 1-1 after extra time before DR Congo edged Nigeria 4-3 on penalties.
Nigeria had taken an early lead in just the third minute when Frank Onyeka struck. But DR Congo stayed composed and equalised in the 32nd minute through Meschack Elia, capitalising on a lapse in Nigeria’s defence.
When it came to penalties, DR Congo held their nerve. Their captain, Chancel Mbemba, calmly converted the decisive spot-kick to seal victory. The menacing moment came under difficult conditions: Torrential rain, a bottle thrown in his direction, and huge pressure.
Adding to the drama, DR Congo's coach swapped goalkeepers just before the shootout, bringing in Timothy Fayulu, who made crucial saves during the spot kicks.
For DR Congo, this win keeps alive their hope of returning to the World Cup, a feat they haven’t managed since 1974, when they entered as Zaire. Nigeria, meanwhile, will now miss out on yet another World Cup, a bitter blow for one of Africa’s traditional powers.
In March 2026, DR Congo will compete in a six-team inter-confederation playoff for a final shot at qualifying for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
