PUMAS MOUNT EPIC COMEBACK TO CRUSH SCOTLAND AT MURRAYFIELD
In a stunning turn of events at Murrayfield, Argentina blew away a 21-point deficit to defeat Scotland 33–24 in an unforgettable clash.
Scotland looked firmly in control, leading 14–0 at halftime and extending that lead to 21–0 early in the second half. But the Pumas weren’t done.
The momentum shift began when a loose pass from Scotland’s Finn Russell was intercepted, and shortly after, Blair Kinghorn was sin-binned: Two moments Argentina would exploit mercilessly.
From there, Argentina reeled off five tries in the final 20-odd minutes, with Julián Montoya, Rodrigo Isgró, Pedro Rubiolo, Pablo Matera, and Justo Piccardo all dotting down. Santiago Carreras, who came off the bench, slotted four conversions to steer the comeback.
Scotland’s early dominance crumbled under relentless pressure. Their discipline slipped, and their defence visibly broke down as the Pumas grew in belief.
Head coach Gregor Townsend now finds himself under intense scrutiny. He admitted that his team “wasn’t good enough” in those decisive closing minutes, especially in terms of decision-making and discipline.
Meanwhile, Argentina coach Felipe Contepomi praised the strategic impact of his second-half substitutions, particularly Carreras and Matera, whose physicality and intensity forced Scotland’s unravelling.
For Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu, the loss was deeply frustrating: “We fell asleep at the wheel,” he admitted, acknowledging that his side blew a huge opportunity.
