RADIOACTIVE SHRIMP RECALLED IN US
Better safe than sorry. That was the thought behind US-based store Walmart when it decided to recall potentially radioactive shrimp.
The shrimp was shipped in shipping containers from Indonesia. According to authorities, Caesium-137 was detected in the containers and the sample of shrimp tested.
According to The Guardian, caesium-137 is a byproduct of nuclear reactions, including nuclear bombs, testing, reactor operations and accidents.
Although it’s not uncommon to find it in soil, food and air worldwide, contaminated products can lead to health problems over time.
The containers were shipped from Indonesia to ports in the US, including Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Savannah.
Once the results were identified, the containers were denied entry into the US. But it was too late for Walmart as it had already received potentially affected products in the first batch of imports.
The recalled shrimp was sold in 13 cities across the country.
At this stage, it’s unclear whether any of the shrimp were actually sold to any customers.
