CHECKERS TO LAUNCH SMART TROLLEY

If standing in a line at the till when buying groceries isn’t your thing, your life is about to get much better.

Shoprite Checkers has recently announced the launch of a new high-tech smart trolley. At first, the trolley will only be a pilot that will allow shoppers to scan items, track a live basket, and check out.

Called the Xpress Trolley, it’ll allow shoppers to scan and bag items as they walk through the store. The trolley will track a live running total, and shoppers will be able to pay directly on the trolley.

No need to stand in a line or scan and pay for products at a till point, as shoppers will be able to track and pay using a touch screen. The screen will also include in-store navigation that will indicate where products are located in each store.

In a statement, the group said it’s a first for South Africa.

“While smart trolleys have been rolled out in some international supermarkets, this is the first time they’re being trialled locally. The group will use insights from this pilot to continue shaping the future of retail in South Africa.”

Trollies will be tested in the Western Cape first.
