VOLKSWAGEN DISCONTINUES TOUAREG
After 24 years, Volkswagen South Africa has announced that it plans to discontinue production of its Touareg.
The popular SUV was first launched in 2002 at the same time as the Porsche Cayenne.
Production of the premium SUV is set to end in 2026.
In 2002, Volkswagen said the Touareg fulfilled the German car manufacturer’s dream of entering the luxury car market with upmarket models. At the time, it competed with other luxury SUVs like the Audi Q7, the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE.
Now, Volkswagen is shifting priorities, and the Touareg doesn’t align with those priorities anymore.
The focus will be on the Tiguan as well as the newly introduced Tayron. Both models will enable the group to focus on higher-volume sales, which will mean bigger profits.
GB News reports that the Tayron provides both five and seven-seat configurations and delivers practical capabilities, including a 2,500-kilogram towing capacity when equipped with the 2.0 TSI 4Motion engine.
In Europe, Volkswagen’s popular electric ID.5 will also be discontinued, with the plan set to take place in 2027. The ID.5 isn’t available in South Africa.
