NOT SA’S BEST SPORTING WEEKEND
It was set up to be the ultimate weekend for any South African sports fan. The lineup included the Proteas against Australia, the Springboks against Australia, and South African Dricus du Plessis fighting for his world title.
But then everything went wrong.
On Saturday morning, the Proteas were off to a great start in the third men’s T20 championship between the two rival countries. Markram bowled well, while Bosch and Rabada were terrific.
For the Aussies, Ellis, Hazlewood, Zampa and Maxwell stood out.
Although the match could’ve gone to either side right up until the second last ball, the Aussies won by two wickets with one ball to spare.
A few hours later, the Springboks took on the Wallabies in Johannesburg. With the world champs being the obvious favourites, the Aussies had determination on their side.
While many blame Rassie’s choice of using new players instead of his seasoned older players, the national coach is obviously preparing for the next World Cup to make sure he’s got a backup or two for every single position.
It was clear that the South Africans were in control during the first half as the halftime whistle blew with a score of 22 – 5 to the Springboks. But, there must’ve been some serious halftime speeches in the Australian locker room because the boys came out with fire in their bellies.
They trashed the Springboks and ended up winning 22 – 35 with no points being scored by the Boks in the second half.
And then on Sunday, the country’s last bit of hope was on UFC fighter Dricus du Plessis. Unfortunately, he failed to successfully defend his UFC Middleweight world champion title and lost to Russian Khamzat Chimaev.
The fight took place in Chicago, USA, and all three judges gave a unanimous score of 50-44 in favour of Chimaev.
