SAA HIT BY CYBERATTACK
Disaster management and business continuity protocols had to be activated this week as South African Airways was hit by a cyberattack.
The cyberattack started on Saturday and led to a temporary disruption in access to the airline’s website, app, and internal operational systems.
In a statement, SAA said that due to its swift actions and protocols in place, it managed to restore its contact centres and sales offices within hours.
“Normal system functionality across all affected platforms was restored later the same day,” the statement said.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the cyberattack.
The SAA confirmed that it has formally reported the incident to the State Security Agency and the South African Police Service for a criminal investigation.
As a precautionary measure under the Protection of Personal Information Act, the state-owned airline said it had notified the Information Regulator of South Africa.
John Lamola, SAA group CEO, said their priority was the security of their business systems.
“The security and integrity of our business systems and the protection of the consumer data entrusted to us remain our highest priority.”
Lamola praised the airline’s immediate actions: “We acted swiftly to contain the disruption, restore services, and initiate a comprehensive investigation.”
