WINDIES SNATCH CONSOLATION WIN DURING FINAL T20
In a dramatic end to their three-match T20I series at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, the West Indies edged South Africa by six runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method on Saturday night.
The result gave the tourists a consolation victory after the Proteas had already wrapped up the series 2–1.
Rain and lightning played spoilsport from the outset, delaying the scheduled start and eventually reducing the contest to just 10 overs per side after weather interruptions forced multiple stoppages.
The West Indies, put into bat by South African captain Aiden Markram, managed a tricky 114/3 in their shortened innings. Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer were the driving forces, each smashing 48 runs at blistering strike rates, and the pair hammered a combined 10 sixes to keep the scoreboard ticking despite the interruptions.
South Africa’s chase never quite got on track. Quinton de Kock, fresh off a century in the second T20I, managed just 28 before falling to West Indies’ spin, and skipper Markram was dismissed cheaply.
There were late sparks, notably from Jason Smith, whose brutal 26 off 10 balls lit up the chase and silenced critics and Tristan Stubbs struck a big six to raise hopes in the final over.
But with 27 needed off 12 and the required rate climbing, the Proteas ultimately came up short, finishing on 118/6 to lose by six runs via DLS.
