WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE COIN COLLECTION TO GO ON AUCTION
What’s believed to be the world’s most expensive coin collection is about to go under the hammer.
The collection belonged to the Danish butter magnate Lars Bruun. When he passed away in 1923, his will detailed that his coin collection wasn’t allowed to be sold for 100 years. Instead, it had to be kept safe as an emergency reserve just in case Denmark’s national collection was destroyed.
In September, that 100-year order will be over and the first set of coins will go up for auction. The entire collection consists of 20,000 pieces therefore it will take a lot of auctions to sell it all.
The first auction will take place on 14 September. A total of 280 lots will go under the hammer, including gold and silver coins from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The coins are valued at over R1.78 billion.
It’s believed the first lot will sell for around R11.8 million.
Once the collection has been sold, it will be the most expensive international coin collection ever sold.
The collection is insured for 500 million Danish kroner which translates to R1.3 billion. Just before the first auction starts, the collection will be on display in Copenhagen.
