BARAKAT IS SOUTH AFRICA’S OSCAR ENTRY
Every year, the American Motion Picture Association ask countries from all over the world to submit their entries for the Best International Feature at the Academy Awards.
The 94th annual Oscars will take place on Sunday 27 March 2022. The nominations will be announced on 8 February 2022.
Locally, Barakat has won multiple awards and that’s why the National Film and Video Foundation has chosen it as the country’s official submission.
Barakat follows Muslim widow Aisha Davids as she tries to bring together her fractured family over Eid-al-Fitr to break the news about her new romance, reports News24.
The film was directed by Amy Jephta. Although she’s the fourth female director to submit a movie to the Oscars, she’s the first woman of colour.
The movie is told in Afrikaaps, the Afrikaans dialect widely used in the Western Cape.
The stars of the movie include South African Film and Television nominee Vinette Ebrahim who plays the role of the mother to four sons played by Joey Rasdien, Mortimer Williams, Keeno-Lee Hector and Danny Ross.
