'BINNELANDERS' ACTOR BEN KRUGER DIES

Popular South African actor, Ben Kruger, has died at the age of 64. The veteran appeared in a range of TV shows and movies over a career that spanned more than 35 years.

According to Suzaan Keyter, kykNET's publicist, Ben died due to complications related to COVID-19. He died in his home in Brooklyn, Pretoria.

Tributes have been pouring in for the actor as news spread of his death.

Over the last eight years, the actor played the role of 'Oom Okkie' on the popular Afrikaans show, Binnelanders.

One of the producers of Binnelanders, Elsje Stark, expressed the entire production team's heartbreak at the sudden loss of their colleague.

"It's with great sadness that the Binnelanders family heard about the sudden passing of Ben Kruger, a much-loved member of our team of actors. Ben portrayed the role of Okkie Ferreira for nearly nine years in his own unique way, and held a very special place in the hearts of his colleagues and loyal viewers. We will always remember him for his professionalism, dignity, humour, and without a doubt, his ability to make the best potjie! We're going to miss you, Ben."

The drive time show on Jacaranda FM, the Scenic Drive with Rian, dedicated their show to the late actor, with listeners and fellow actors sharing their favourite memories of Ben.
