‘BRAT’ IS 2024’S WORD OF THE YEAR
It’s official: ‘Brat’ has been named the word of the year by the Collins Dictionary.
The UK-based dictionary said in a statement that the phrase has taken the world by storm.
“More than a hugely successful album, ‘Brat’ is a cultural phenomenon that has resonated with people globally, and ‘Brat Summer’ established itself as an aesthetic and a way of life.”
The British singer Charli XCX has been credited with the word’s popularity after they released an album with ‘Brat’ as the title.
The singer has been quoted as saying a brat is “that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dub things sometimes”.
“Who feels like herself but maybe also has a breakdown? But kind of, like parties through it, is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Like, does dumb things. But it’s brat. You’re a brat. That’s a brat.”
The term brat became synonymous with US vice-president Kamala Harris’s recent presidential campaign when Charli XCX posted on her Instagram “Kamala is a brat”. It soon became the theme of the campaign.
With the US going to the polls on Tuesday, we’ll soon see if this was not only a brat summer for Harris, but it could potentially also become a brat campaign for her.
